Dr. Smotkin, a leading fuel cell expert, is a Professor of Chemistry at the Northeastern University., and a Research Professor at the University of Notre Dame. His research on fuel cells led to the creation of NuVant Systems, which he founded in 1999 .

Since 1992, Dr. Smotkin has trained numerous scientists now working with major fuel cell developers. He has been awarded over $11 million for fuel cell research by the US government and private industry. He was director of the Fuel Cell Battery Research HUB program at IIT from 1994 to 2001, and served as IIT's Co-Director for the Center of Electrochemical Science and Engineering, which focused on fuel cell research and development from, 1995 – 2002. Dr. Smotkin holds 7 issued patents, 5 patents pending and has over 50 peer reviewed publications.


Chief Scientist

Dr. Mallouk is the DuPont Professor of Materials Chemistry at Pennsylvania
State University (Penn State). He earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley in 1983, and was a postdoctoral fellow at MIT from 1983-85. Since then, he has held faculty positions at the University of Texas at Austin and Penn State, where he has led a research group working in electrochemistry and materials chemistry.

To date he has approximately 215 publications and six patents in these areas. Dr. Mallouk has worked on fuel cell catalysis, electrochemical sensors, and combinatorial chemistry since 1993, when he began a collaboration with Dr. Smotkin. They published the first paper on high throughput methods in electrocatalysis in 1998, and currently work together on the development of new materials for fuel cells.

Dr. Mallouk has received numerous honors, including the Presidential Young Investigator Award, the Exxon/ACS Solid State Chemistry Award, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Research Fellowship, and the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award. Dr. Mallouk was a member of the Department of Energy's Chemical Sciences Council, has held several offices in the American Chemical Society, and is Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Chemical Society.
